What is a Distributed Antenna System?

Distributed antenna systems (DAS) are a network of unobtrusive antennas throughout a building, which produce a world-class quality of wireless radio service. Think of it like a radio tower inside of a building that is powerful, secure, and reliable. There are many benefits, but for an EMS responder, it means they will have a much needed reliable communication system for continuous operation during fires, floods, and other emergencies.

How do Distributed Antenna Systems Work?

A DAS is a network of antennas that are sending and receiving signals on a carrier’s frequency, which results in improved voice and data connectivity for end-users. A DAS has two primary components:

  • Signal Source – As the name implies, a DAS “distributes” signals. But it doesn’t generate the signal. A DAS needs to be fed a signal from a source. The four most common sources are off-air (via an antenna on the roof), an on-site BTS (Base Transceiver Station), and small cells.
  • Distribution System – Once the signal is received, it’s distributed throughout the building. There are four main types of distribution systems – active (using fiber optic or ethernet cable), passive, hybrid, and digital.
